Boost your tulsi plant's growth in winter with a homemade fertilizer

Learn to prepare a nutrient-rich homemade fertilizer using common kitchen ingredients to help your tulsi plant thrive and become bushy during the winter months.

The idea

Prepare a nutrient-rich homemade fertilizer to support your tulsi plant's health and growth, especially during winter. This blend provides essential nutrients to help the plant become bushy and vibrant.

To make the fertilizer, you will need:

  • 1 tablespoon of mustard cake powder
  • 1 tablespoon of coffee powder
  • 1 tablespoon of tea powder
  • 1 tablespoon of powdered eggshells
  • 1 tablespoon of powdered banana peels

Combine all these ingredients thoroughly in a bowl to create a uniform mixture.

Why it works

This homemade fertilizer provides a balanced mix of nutrients vital for plant growth. Mustard cake is rich in nitrogen, which promotes lush green foliage. Coffee and tea powders also contribute nitrogen and improve soil structure. Eggshells are an excellent source of calcium, strengthening plant cell walls and preventing deficiencies. Banana peels are high in potassium, crucial for flowering, fruiting, and overall plant vigor, helping the plant withstand environmental stress like winter cold. Together, these ingredients nourish the soil and the plant, encouraging robust growth and bushiness.

Try it

  1. Prepare the fertilizer: Gather 1 tablespoon each of mustard cake powder, coffee powder, tea powder, powdered eggshells, and powdered banana peels. Mix them well in a container.
  2. Prepare the plant: Gently loosen the topsoil around your tulsi plant with a small trowel or your fingers, being careful not to damage the roots.
  3. Apply the fertilizer: Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the prepared fertilizer mixture evenly around the base of the plant, on the loosened soil.
  4. Water thoroughly: Immediately after applying the fertilizer, water the plant generously. This helps the nutrients dissolve and and seep into the soil, making them available to the roots.
  5. Observe: Repeat this application once a month during the winter season or whenever your plant appears to be struggling. Watch for new leaf growth, increased bushiness, and an overall healthier appearance within a few weeks.

Watch out for

  • Over-fertilization: While beneficial, using too much fertilizer can burn the roots. Stick to the recommended 1 tablespoon per plant.
  • Drainage: Ensure your pot has good drainage. Poor drainage can lead to nutrient lockout or root rot, even with good fertilizer.
  • Pest attraction: Organic fertilizers can sometimes attract pests if not properly incorporated into the soil or if left in large clumps on the surface.
  • Fresh vs. powdered: Always use powdered ingredients for better absorption and to avoid attracting pests or mold from decomposing fresh materials.
