Quick fix for powdery mildew on plants

Learn how to quickly and cheaply eliminate powdery mildew from your plants using a simple homemade solution of dish soap and baking soda. This method helps restore plant health and prevents further spread of the fungal disease.

The idea

To combat powdery mildew, create an alkaline solution using common household ingredients. The primary method involves mixing dish soap and baking soda with water. An alternative method uses milk diluted with water.

Baking Soda & Dish Soap Solution:

  • 1 teaspoon of dish soap
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 gallon of water

Milk Solution (Alternative):

  • 12 cups of milk
  • 1 gallon of water

Why it works

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that thrives in certain pH conditions. Baking soda is alkaline, and when applied to the plant, it changes the pH of the leaf surface, creating an environment where the mildew cannot survive. The dish soap acts as a surfactant, helping the baking soda solution stick to the leaves and also physically smothers the fungal spores. For the milk solution, the calcium in milk is believed to help strengthen plant cell walls, making them more resistant to fungal attacks, and it also has fungicidal properties when exposed to sunlight.

Try it

  1. Identify powdery mildew: Look for white, powdery spots on the leaves and stems of your plants, especially on susceptible varieties like squash, cucumbers, or zucchini.
  2. Prepare the baking soda solution: In a watering can or sprayer, combine 1 teaspoon of dish soap and 1.5 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 gallon of water. Stir thoroughly until the baking soda is fully dissolved.
  3. Apply the solution: Thoroughly spray or pour the solution over the affected plants, ensuring both the top and bottom surfaces of the leaves are completely covered.
  4. Timing is crucial: Apply this solution in the evening or on an overcast day. Avoid applying it during direct sunlight.
  5. Rinse the next morning: The following morning, before the sun becomes intense, rinse your plants thoroughly with plain water to remove any soap residue.
  6. Monitor and reapply: Observe your plants over the next few days. The powdery mildew should start to recede. Reapply the solution if new mildew appears.

Alternative Milk Treatment: If you prefer to use milk, dilute 12 cups of milk with 1 gallon of water. Apply this solution to your plants on a bright, sunny day, as sunlight helps activate the milk's fungicidal properties.

Watch out for

  • Applying the baking soda and soap solution in direct sunlight can cause leaf burn. Always apply in the evening or on a cloudy day and rinse thoroughly the next morning.
  • Ensure good air circulation around your plants to help prevent powdery mildew from returning.
  • While effective for powdery mildew, this remedy may not work for all fungal diseases. Always confirm the type of disease before treatment.
  • Test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the plant first to ensure it doesn't cause adverse reactions, especially on sensitive plants.
